The № 523 is a line preamplifier built around a discrete, direct-coupled, fully balanced, dual-monaural signal path. Volume is set by a balanced R-2R resistor ladder with analog switches instead of a potentiometer. The chassis is 6063-T5 extruded aluminum, and the unit is designed and assembled in the USA.
A discrete, op-amp-free class-A phono stage sits in its own steel enclosure with separated channels. The MM section has fixed 40 dB gain and five capacitance settings. The MC section offers three gain settings and ten resistive loading values. A defeatable 15 Hz infrasonic filter is included. The front-panel 1/4-inch headphone output runs from the main output circuit in class A, with selectable output impedance, and is specified for headphones up to 32 ohms.
There are two balanced XLR and three RCA line inputs plus the RCA phono input. Outputs are balanced XLR, RCA and the headphone jack. A selectable 80 Hz fourth-order high-pass filter helps integrate one or two subwoofers. Control and integration options include Ethernet/IP, RS-232, USB, 12V triggers, an IR input and a metal remote control.
