The 1236A is a very large, three-way active studio main monitor in the Genelec SAM range, with a separate rack-mounted amplifier unit and GLM network control. It is aimed at large control rooms where several listeners share one sweet spot.

The 1236A is a floor-standing main monitor built around two 458 mm bass cones, two 125 mm midrange cones and a 25 mm compression tweeter in a reflex-ported MDF enclosure. Each driver group has its own Class D amplification and an active crossover, and a Directivity Control Waveguide shapes dispersion to give a wide listening area with flat off-axis response.
The amplifiers sit in a separate individually calibrated RAM-XL unit made up of three 3U rack-mounted modules: bass (2 x 1000 W), midrange (2 x 400 W) and treble (250 W). Driver protection circuitry limits output when levels or voice-coil temperatures reach safe limits, and Intelligent Signal Sensing puts the monitor into a low-power sleep state when no signal is present.
The monitor belongs to the Smart Active Monitoring family. Two RJ45 ports connect it to a GLM network, where the GLM software handles level, distance delay and room response compensation through AutoCal 2. Calibration needs GLM software plus either a 9320A SAM Reference Controller or a GLM Calibration Kit, both sold separately. Audio comes in over balanced analog XLR or AES/EBU digital XLR, and a digital XLR output passes the signal on.
