The HD-P2 records stereo audio onto Compact Flash cards at sample rates from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz in 16- or 24-bit resolution. Files are saved as time-stamped Broadcast WAV, so they can be placed into a DAW project with sample accuracy. A Retake button lets the user redo the last recording with one press, and files are re-saved continually as a guard against data loss.
Inputs include XLR mic connections with phantom power and an analog peak limiter, unbalanced stereo RCA in and out, and S/PDIF digital I/O. There is a headphone output, plus a built-in mono microphone and speaker for desktop interviews. For sync work it takes SMPTE/LTC timecode on a balanced XLR, chases incoming timecode, and accepts video clock and tri-level sync, with pull-up and pull-down sample rates for video formats.
The layout follows a tape-machine style, with an angled, large LCD, shortcut keys and LED indicators. Control is from the front panel or a PS/2 keyboard. Files are moved to a computer over FireWire. Power comes from eight AA batteries, giving roughly 5.5 hours, or from a DC adapter.
