The DR-1 is a pocket-sized portable recorder with a pair of stereo condenser microphones mounted on a variable-angle mechanism in an A/B configuration, so the mics can be aimed for a wide stereo image from almost any angle. An external microphone can also be used. It records WAV at 44.1 or 48 kHz in 16-bit or 24-bit, or MP3 at 32 to 320 kbps, and plays both formats back.
Recording aids include analog auto gain control, an analog limiter and a switchable low-cut filter that reduces handling and wind noise. Further functions are a built-in tuner, a vocal cancel feature and overdubbing, which lets you record narration, singing or an instrument over an existing recording. The unit was originally supplied with a 1 GB SD card.
On the connection side it offers a 1/8" stereo mic input with 2.3 V power, a 1/8" stereo line input, a 1/4" mono mic input and a 1/8" stereo headphone output. A USB 2.0 port links it to a computer. Power comes from a rechargeable, replaceable lithium-ion battery, rated at about 7 hours of MP3 recording with the built-in mic.
